Spaniels — Cockers, Springers and working lines — are high-drive, nose-led dogs that thrive on scent stimulation. Public parks often aren't enough, and the prey drive makes off-lead work risky near wildlife. Secure fields solve both problems.
Spaniels are wired to hunt. Even pet-bred Cockers and Springers retain strong scenting instincts, high energy reserves and a tendency to disappear into undergrowth the moment they pick up an interesting trail. This makes them wonderful, engaging, slightly exhausting dogs — and it makes off-lead freedom in public parks a genuine risk, especially in rural areas with deer, rabbits or game birds.
A secure dog field gives a Spaniel the one thing they crave most: unrestricted sniffing. With no deer to chase, no hedgerow to vanish into, and no livestock to worry about, your Spaniel can use their nose for 45 minutes straight — which is more mentally tiring for them than 90 minutes of running.
What makes a good field for a Spaniel. Fence height is less critical than with Huskies — a 5ft fence contains most Spaniels. What matters more is:
Scent variety. Fields with long grass, scrub edges, hedgerow perimeters, or rotating livestock fields nearby give the nose something to do. A bowling-green-flat mown paddock is less stimulating than a slightly wilder space.
Size for quartering. Working Spaniels naturally quarter — zig-zagging across a field in a search pattern. They need width as much as length. Half an acre minimum, ideally more.
No escape routes through hedges. Spaniels are smaller than Labs and will squeeze through gaps. Check perimeter integrity with the owner before booking.
For recall training with high-drive Spaniels, a whistle is non-negotiable. Spaniels often have selective hearing when their nose is on a scent — a whistle cuts through in a way voice commands can't.
Before you book
An Acme 210.5 whistle is the UK gundog standard for working Spaniels and cuts through 'nose mode' far better than voice. Pair with a long line during training transitions.

FAQs
Are all secure dog fields suitable for Spaniels?
No — fence height, gate security and field size all matter for Spaniels specifically. Always confirm with the field owner before booking if your dog is a known escape risk.
What fence height does a Spaniel (Cocker, Springer, Working) need?
See the fence height guidance above — requirements vary by breed. For athletic breeds, 6ft minimum is our general recommendation, but always confirm with the owner.
Do Spaniels need bigger fields?
Generally yes — high-energy and working breeds need space to run at speed. Look for fields of half an acre or more.
