How to Book a Dog Field — Getting the Best Slots and Prices
Updated 2026-04-09 · 8 minute read
Booking a secure dog field is straightforward, but there's a meaningful difference between people who book whatever slot is available and people who have a strategy. The strategic bookers pay less, get better slots, visit more consistently, and get more out of every session. None of this requires insider knowledge — just a bit of planning.
Understanding the booking landscape. Most UK secure dog fields use one of three booking systems: a dedicated website with online booking (increasingly common), a Facebook page where you message to request slots, or a phone/text system for smaller operations. The booking system itself doesn't affect quality — some of the best fields run entirely on text messages. What matters is responsiveness and clarity.
Peak times are weekend mornings (9am-12pm) and weekend early afternoons. These fill up first, often a week or more in advance. If your field only has weekend slots when you check, it's not that the field is booked solid — it's that you're competing with everyone else for the same popular windows.
The off-peak strategy. Weekday sessions between 10am and 3pm are consistently the cheapest and most available across UK fields. If you work from home, have flexible hours, or can arrange a midweek slot, you'll find booking much easier and often cheaper. Some fields offer explicit weekday discounts of 10-20 percent. Others simply have more availability, which means more choice of specific times.
Early morning slots (7-8am) are underused in every season except summer. They're ideal for dogs that need exercise before the owner's workday, and the field is typically drier and less churned up because fewer sessions have happened that day. Winter early mornings require a headtorch but are often the quietest and most peaceful sessions available.
Late afternoon and evening slots (4-7pm) fill up in winter because daylight is limited, but in summer they're excellent value — warm enough to be pleasant, but past the peak heat of the day.
Block booking and subscriptions. An increasing number of UK fields offer block-booking discounts. The typical structure is a package of 5 or 10 sessions at a reduced per-session rate — often 10-15 percent off. If you're planning to use a field regularly, a block booking reduces your average cost and usually guarantees availability for your preferred slot.
Some fields have moved to subscription models where you pay a monthly fee for a set number of sessions (commonly 4 per month). These can be excellent value if you'll use all the sessions, but check the cancellation terms — a subscription you don't use is money wasted.
How to shortlist 2-3 fields. Relying on a single field is a common mistake. Fields close for maintenance, get fully booked during school holidays, or may not suit every season (a field that's perfect in summer might be waterlogged in winter). Having 2-3 fields in your rotation gives you options.
Start with your county page on PawsField and filter by rating and review count. Shortlist the 3-4 best-reviewed fields within a reasonable drive (15-20 minutes is the sweet spot for regular use). Try each one during a quiet off-peak slot. After 2-3 visits, you'll have a clear preference order.
Keep your second and third choices bookmarked for when your top choice is full, closed, or conditions aren't right. Rotating between fields also gives your dog variety, which is mentally enriching.
Seasonal booking tips. Summer: book early morning or late evening to avoid heat. Winter: book midday slots for the most daylight. Autumn: the best season for field sessions — mild temperatures, lower demand, reasonable daylight. Spring: watch for muddy ground conditions as fields recover from winter.
School holidays increase demand significantly, especially half-terms and the summer break. If you need holiday-period slots, book at least a week in advance. Some popular fields fill up 2-3 weeks ahead during August.
Cancellation and rebooking. Check the cancellation policy before booking. Most fields allow free cancellation with 24-48 hours notice but charge for late cancellations or no-shows. Weather cancellations vary — some fields cancel proactively in extreme conditions, others leave the decision to you.
If you need to cancel, do it as early as possible. The slot may be offered to another owner, and the field owner avoids a gap in their schedule. Good communication builds a relationship with the field owner, which can mean priority access to popular slots in future.

FAQs
When is the cheapest time to book a secure dog field?
Weekday sessions between 10am and 3pm are consistently the cheapest and most available. Early morning slots (7-8am) are also underused outside summer.
Should I block-book a secure dog field?
If you plan to visit regularly, yes. Block bookings of 5-10 sessions typically save 10-15 percent per session and often guarantee availability for your preferred slot.
How many fields should I have on my shortlist?
Two or three. Relying on a single field means you have no options when it is booked, closed for maintenance, or unsuitable for the season. A rotation also gives your dog variety.
